Following suit with recent years, the 2016 Kennedy Half Dollar (Buy on eBay) was not issued for general circulation, but only distributed within numismatic products created for coin collectors.
The earliest release for the coin came on January 6, 2016 when the 2016 Birth Set went on sale at the United States Mint. This product contained the 2016 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint and carrying the “S” mint mark. The clad proof half dollar would also be included within the 2016 Happy Birthday Coin Set and the regular 2016 Proof Set.
Circulating quality examples of the half dollar struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, carrying the “P” and “D” mint marks respectively, were first available on February 24, 2016. On this date, the United States Mint offered for sale two roll sets and 200-coin bags of 2016 Kennedy Half Dollars. The two roll sets contained one 20-coin roll of coins from each mint facility, while the 200-coin bags contained 100-coins from each mint facility. The two roll sets were priced at $32.95 and the bags were priced at $139.95, representing a healthy premium above the face value of the coins. The 2016 Uncirculated Mint Set released later in the year would also include the 2016 Kennedy Half Dollar.
A 90% silver proof version of the half dollar was released within the 2016 Silver Proof Set. This product was released on April 18, 2016 and contained Proof examples of each of the year’s circulating coins, with the dime, quarters, and half dollar struck in 90% silver and 10% copper.
In total, the United States Mint reported circulation strike 2016 Kennedy Half Dollar production of 2.1 million pieces each at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities.
